Please have your child read to you aloud every day. Home Reading books at their "just right" reading level are sent home every week. These can be read and re-read often. In the Reading Log, please write the date, book title and any comments. Please return the Home Reading pouch each week to be checked and books changed.
Later in the year and as students progress in their reading abilities, a Reading Response notebook will be added to their Home Reading pouch. Students will write a sentence, make a connection, ask a question or comment about what they have read as a way to show their understanding.
Library books come home once a week. Students may select 1-2 books each week and they are to be returned the following week. These are selected by your child, chosen by what interested them at the moment. Children choose anything from cookbooks to novels - there's always an adventure in reading! When their books are returned, they can check out new books on their Library day.
You may want to order a book for your child to enjoy at home. Our class code is RC147591. Please keep in mind that not all books pictured in the flyer may be appropriate - there are lots of great authors, Canadian content, and wholesome books to choose from.
Homework calendars are sent home each month as an optional extra activity. See the opposite side of the calendar for helpful parent tips. Please return the completed calendars at the beginning of the following month. Students are excited to receive a prize for completed calendars.
When your child is absent, the work that they have missed is collected for them. Most work can be caught up in class time and during "catch up" blocks built into our schedule once they return to school.
Prolonged or frequent absences may require work to be sent home to be completed when they return to school so that they are not missing out on learning or practicing key concepts. Please ensure that books, booklets and materials sent home for homework are returned by the date requested so that your child has the materials they need to do their work along with the rest of their class.
