Grade 8-12 students had an impromptu spelling bee today which means no lists of words given out beforehand to memorize. Sound hard? You bet it is! This is when knowing a few spelling rules really pays off plus it doesn't hurt to know origins of words either.

Each grade picked 3 students to represent their home classroom. Mrs. Keenan served as the moderator and gave students words to spell from grade 3, grade 6, and the high school master lists. Words from the grade 3 list were spelled correctly by all participants, thankfully. Grade 6 words were definitely more difficult but only a few students were tripped up by them. The master list proved very difficult indeed with most students dropping out in this round. It was left up to the last three to master the master list: Dana, Lewis, and Austin. In the end, it was grade 9 student, Dana, who won the round, the entire spelling bee, and first dibs on a box of Timbits from among the participants. Could the prize be more Canadian? I doubt it.

Well done, students! You are spellers extraordinaire.
